Oil Fired Central Heating Costs

Always keen to save money on Oil Fired Central Heating costs, a few years ago I read an article on the subject in The Daily Telegraph by Jeff Howell.

After mulling it around in my mind decided to give it a ‘go’ but adapting the idea to suit my own requirements.

Jeff advocated setting the system temperature slightly lower than normal and letting it run 24/7.  He reasoned that once the fabric of the house warmed up, the lower temperature became normal and acceptable.

I started the experiment just prior to a cold, snowy spell (January, 2013).  The details, with my personal modifications, are as follows:

1.  Thermostat set at 19 degrees C. to run 24/7.

2.  If I was going to be out of the house for more than 2 hours, I lowered the thermostat by one degree.

3.  I also lowered the temperature setting by just one degree at night when I went to bed restoring the temperature to normal when I got up in the morning.

This went very well.  The fabric of the house became warm after the second day and it was great not to wake up in the morning to a cold house.  It was great to think I was on track to reducing my oil fired central heating costs.

BUT – I like a warm house and when the outside temperature dropped to around minus 3 degrees, this was affecting the inside of the house.

Therefore, during this period I raised the central heating thermostat to 20 degrees.

I have a Watchman Sonic Device  (www.save-money-guide.com/oil-storage-tank-for-home.html) fitted to one of the wall sockets in the kitchen and I have noticed how much slower it is to move in a downwards direction.

I can only state that it makes sense to keep the fabric of the house at a constant temperature.  This negates the necessity of having to boost the house up from cold every morning and using loads of fuel and increasing the oil central heating costs.

The benefits are fantastic.  It is lovely to feel warm and comfortable at any time of the day or night and this must be of benefit to the house, myself and my oil fired central heating costs.

As the outside temperatures rise I shall be able to restore the thermostat temperature setting downwards to 19 degrees.

The above is purely my own research on the theory mentioned by Jeff Howell in The Daily Telegraph (to whom credit is given) and is for guidance only.

Obviously this is a matter of personal choice - no two human beings are the same.  Having seen the benefits so far, it would seem worthy of experimentation and the chance of reducing oil fired central heating costs.

To increase my chances of saving money I have joined an Oil Buying Syndicate and so far this is proving highly successful.

I have no knowledge at all of gas central heating.  However, a cousin who has this system reports that she is using considerably less fuel.
