Country Bike Rides - Does that Count?
Oviston Nature Reserve Where We Ride
I am excited to share with you my favourite way of being out in the fresh air! Bike riding! I am sure my dog would love to join me, and maybe he would have in his younger days but now he has a heart condition that makes him have seizures when he gets too worked up. So it leaves my husband and myself, and sometimes a good friend, to hop on the bikes and head for the nature reserve. No fancy shoes, no fashion bikers gear, no high-tech bikes!
We live in South Africa and so have the benefit of mostly sunny skies all year round - and we like to take advantage of this. The first step to making bike rides a part of your regular fun is to just START! Stop making elaborate plans. Stop waiting for when you feel like it. Stop trying to do it at a particular time of day. Stop making excuses! This works for us.
A few years ago we bought a property in a really old, run-down and almost unwanted little town. We were just looking for a piece of peace - and we found it. Venterstad is near the Gariep Dam (which is the 2nd biggest man-made dam in the southern hemisphere) and is close to three nature reserves...
So what do we do?...
We grab some water, put on the sunscreen, hop on the bikes and in ten minutes we are riding on paths through the nature reserve. Time is irrelevant and the animals treat us with curiosity. We can ride past ostrich, buck, zebra, wildebeest and the odd cat and feel part of their world. And the birds are most beautiful and easily my best creatures.
I can forget my straining breath and tingling leg muscles - for a while - as I relish being part of this beautiful place.
And the best part of all? Mostly, we are the only humans around. How many places can offer you all of this, anytime of the day, anytime of the week?
