More Car Insurance Tips to Save Money

This is where you can save money.

1. Restrict the number of drivers on your policy - particularly those under the age of 25. Insurers always price their premium according to the youngest driver or the one with the least experience.

2. Put a limit on your annual mileage - the lower the better. The AA says you can save up to 5 per cent for 6,000 miles and 2.5 per cent for 8,000 miles.

3. If you have access to a garage, use it. Locking your vehicle in a garage overnight, rather than on the street, could save you another 5 per cent.

4. Buy a smaller, older and cheaper vehicle. It may not have the same kudos as owning a top-of-the-range brand new model, but it will certainly shave pounds off your insurance.

5. Installing an alarm can save you up to 8 per cent, depending on the type of alarm. The AA reckons that an industry-approved Thatcham alarm is the best.

6. Consider accepting higher excess. Most policies include a voluntary and/or compulsory excess. If you are prepared to increase this slightly you can reduce your premium.

7. Pay the insurance premium in full at the outset. Paying by monthly installments is almost always more expensive.
